Kitchen Backsplash Installation

The backsplash is the tile people look at most. Konstantin plans where the pattern starts, how it meets the hood and the window, and cuts tight around every outlet and switch.

What’s included

  • Subway tile
  • Herringbone and chevron
  • Hexagon and arabesque
  • Stone and glass mosaic
  • Full-height walls behind a range
  • Window returns and edges
  • Outlet and switch cutouts
  • Outdoor kitchen backsplashes

How it’s done

  1. Plan the start line

Pattern is centered on the range or the sink, so the cuts at both ends match.

  2. Protect the counters

Counters, cabinets and appliances are covered before work starts.

  3. Cut around everything

Tight, clean cuts around outlets, switches, the hood and window trim.

  4. Finish the edges

Where tile ends on an open wall, a trim profile or a finished edge, not a raw cut.

How long does a kitchen backsplash installation take?

A typical kitchen backsplash takes one to two days: one to set the tile and one to grout and clean up, since thinset has to cure before grout. Herringbone, small mosaics and natural stone that needs sealing take longer. You can usually keep using the kitchen in the evenings while the work is going on.

Should a backsplash go all the way to the ceiling?

Behind a range hood or on a wall with open shelves, running the tile to the ceiling looks finished and is easy to wipe down. On a standard kitchen with upper cabinets the tile stops under the cabinets. Where cabinets end, the tile should end at a clean line, not halfway up a bare wall.
